Fibrils, also known as multiwalled nanotubes, have been used in conductive composites applications for some time now. Their declining prices are likely to result in increasing use in antistatic polymers for various markets. Fullerene nanotubes, which have smaller diameters and better structural integrity than fibrils, provide superior performance in many composite applications. In addition to serving niche markets that require enhanced performance that fibrils simply cannot deliver, fullerene nanotubes may ultimately replace fibrils in certain market segments. In this article, a team of nanotube technologists describes different types of fullerene nanotubes and composite applications. They also discuss processes for commercialization of nanotube-based composites.
